Not great moments in sports
Sports brings out the best in competitors that results in memorable performances. In a Sports Illustrated compilation by Steve Rushin, here are some of the not at all great moments that happened in sports last year.
•It pays to have your house built near a golf course. Overlooking the 15th green, the house was hit by 651 golf balls since 2017. They sued the Indian Pond Country Club at Kingston, Mass. They were awarded $4.93 million in damages but the club appealed the verdict.
•With an open bottle of Jack Daniels, a 58-year old woman was arrested on the center lane of Interstate 95 in Brevard County, Florida driving a golf cart. Moral? Golfing, driving and drinking results in a miss hit.
•During the Arnold Palmer Invitational at his Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando, Florida last March 2022, world number 1 ranked Spanish golfer Jon Rahm was seven inches short of a 10-inch putt on the seventh hole. Asked how it happened, he replied, “I really coldn’t tell you.”
•During the Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic, Nick Kygios wanted a spectator removed for allegedly being disruptive. Asked to identify the person by the umpire, Kyrgios replied, “The one who looks like she had 700 drinks, bro.” The woman happend to be a lawyer and filed a case for defamation, which was settled last November after he apologized and donated to a charity of the lawyer’s choice.
•Flatulence can do us harm, as in the case of Brazilian footballer Marcelo, who was dropped from the French top division Lyon first saying in part, as per report, “due to continous farting and laughing in the dressing room.”
•Baseball is not just all about home runs and stealing bases. It can also be a venue for quickies. During a Toronto Blue Jays - Chicago Cubs game at the Rogers Center in Toronto, a couple was caught on cam doing it at the topmost level of the stadium. Also at the top row of the Ring Central Coliseum at Oakland during the A’s game versus the Seatlle Mariners, a couple was also caught on video having sex.
•Wearing a t-shirt boldly printed with MOTHER OF THE YEAR, a woman punched an umpire in the face at a children’s softball game in Laurel, Mississippi.
•When Dominican pro baseball player Fernando Tatis, Jr. of the San Diego Padres reported to spring training with a fractured left wrist, he was asked by a reporter about his offseason motorcycle accident. He replied, “Which one?”
•In sport fishing, two fishermen in Cleveland were criminally charged for allegedly inserting weights into their catches in an attempt to pocket the $30,000 tournament top prize.
•A Miami real estate developer paid $518,628 at an auction the “final touchdown ball” thrown by retired Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady. Less than 24 hours after paying, Brady unretired. “I couldn’t believe it,” said the bidder. “Is this possible? How could this be happening?” The transaction was later voided.
