Caitom eyes KO win in WBF title bid

Emmanuel B. Villaruel - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Rey “The Future” Caitom, Jr. (9-0-1, 4KOs) eyes no less than a swift and decisive victory when he slugs it out with fellow countryman  Ar-Ar Andales (10-2, 2KOs) for the vacant World Boxing Foundation (WBF) minimumweight title in the Big Yellow Boxing Promotions’ Fight Night 4 on March 9 at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu atrium.

The 32-year-old Caitom came out of a 12-year hiatus in 2018 to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a world champion.

Upon his ring return, Caitom pulled off three consecutive victories capped by a smashing second round knockout of Indonesian Frans Damur Palue to seize the WBC Asia Boxing Council Continental minimumweight crown on September 28 last year in Singapore.

Now, Caitom is one step away from reaching his goal.

“I will do whatever it takes to win this WBF title because it’s really my dream to become a world champion,” said Caitom, who is now winding up his rigid training regimen at the ALA Gym. “I also believe that it will lead me to bigger fights in the future.”

Caitom knows that fighting his compatriot who is his 12 years junior is tough but the fighting pride of Mandaue City vows to put on a show in his first fight back in his homeland in 14 years.

“I can assure that this is going to be a great fight because my opponent is very young, and also he’s a champion and a world title challenger,” said Caitom. “This is a big test for me. A Filipino vs Filipino in a world championship. But I’m going to knock him out.”
