UC athletes pad lead in City Olympics
CEBU, Philippines — The University of Cebu pulled away from its rivals in Day 2 of the 29th Cebu City Olympics at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.
UC tankers of coach Rolando Alvarez snared 14 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze medals to cap off a dominating performance at the pool.
UC boys registered a new record in the secondary medley relay with a time of 4:48.92, eclipsing Unit 4’s previous record of 4:54.37. They also broke Maria Montessori International School’s record in the 200m freestyle (1:56.47) with their time of 1:54.80.
Over at the oval, UC collected three golds, six silvers and three bronzes. Martchan Torregosa scored a double-gold in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:30.22 and in the 800m with a time of 2:10.03. Cherry Andrin also dominated the 3000m run with a time of 11:08.53.
UC gymnasts led by Mark Angelo Sevila and Eunie Ginell Soronio also shone in the artistic gymnastics raking 10 golds, nine silvers and four bronze medals.
University of San Carlos stayed at second place with 12 golds, 23 silvers and 14 bronzes while Unit 3 is at third spot with nine golds, five silvers and two bronzes.
USC girls futsal posted a 5-1 victory over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation for the gold, while St.Theresa’s College salvaged a bronze medal after escaping Abellana National School.
Meanwhile, Unit 4 topped secondary wushu with six golds while unit 8 ruled wrestling with three golds.
ANS shone in dancesport with eight golds and two silvers in the secondary division while the elementary level saw unit 4 on top with four golds, two silvers and four bronzes.
UC elementary squad also reigned in the medal standing thanks to their gymnasts and swimmers. UC got 10 golds, three silvers and two bronzes followed by Unit 8 with 9-12-12 gold-silver-bronze medal tally.
