A race for a worthy cause
UV Centennial Run
CEBU, Philippines — Living up to its theme,“UV: A Centennial of Love and Service to Humanity”, the University of the Visayas Centennial Run slated on January 12 is for a worthy cause.
The race date coincides with the birthday of the late Don Vicente Gullas, who founded UV as Visayan Institute in 1919.
Atty. Darling Chyrmyth Wagas, co-chairperson of the UV Centennial celebration, said the run is aimed at raising funds for the university's adopted barangay.
"We have lined up various activities and programs for out adopted barangay, Barangay Kamagayan. The programs are about health education, law and order, and technical and vocational skills," said Wagas.
"Our aim really is to help the people of the barangay better their lives with these programs. And to sustain this, we also need funding. That is why we are having this fun run as a fund-raising project for the barangay."
Wagas assured that the proceeds of their charity race will certainly go a long way.
"This will help the less fortunate especially in giving scholarships to poor but deserving students," said Wagas.
The event features the 3K, 5K, and 10K distances.
UV Athletic Director Chris Mejarito said they are targeting at least 3,000 runners in their kick-off activity for UV's year-round centennial celebrations that will culminate with the grand alumni homecoming this December at Marco Polo Hotel.
Aside from medals and certificates, over P70,000 in cash prize will be given away to the top finishers in each category.
Registration fee is pegged at P250 for the 3K, P350 for the 5K, and P450 for the 10K inclusive of a singlet, race bib, refreshments and freebies.
