2 CWA lifters to don Philippines colors in world tourney
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu Weightlifting Association (CWA) has picked two athletes to form part of the Philippine team in the World University Weightlifting Championship on September 20 in Biala Podlaska, Poland.
They are Elreen Ann Ando of University of Cebu and Rowell Garcia of University of Zamboanga. They earned spots to the world tiff after a stellar performance in the CWA National Students Weightlifting Championships over the weekend at the Terraces of Ayala Center Cebu.
CWA secretary-general Jude Sulla said the two were able to qualify after posting the highest Sinclair total in their respective divisions. The two were also hailed as the best overall weightlifter during the tournament.
“We used the Sinclair formula which is recognized by the International Weightlifting Foundation. Basically, we based it on the Sinclair total of the athletes where the two emerged as the best lifters,” Sulla said.
The 20-year-old Ando, who won two gold medals in the women’s 69 kgs class, amassed a total of 231.56 points, while Garcia, the men’s 56 kgs champion, accumulated 357.75 points.
Sulla said the CWA will constantly monitor the progress of the two athletes as they train with their own coaches in their respective universities.
“We are confident that they will give their best and we will be happy if they win,” said Sulla. “But we will not put pressure on them. What’s important is that they get the exposure and the experience they needed.”
