Canoy ready to rumble in Africa
CEBU, Philippines - Jason Canoy of the Omega Boxing Gym has arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, and is ripped and ready for his World Boxing Federation bantamweight championship fight against local favorite Mzuvikile Magwaca on Friday, March 31.
Canoy arrived in Cape Town Monday, after a 24-hour trip that took them from Cebu to Dubai (via Clark) and on to Cape Town. The Clark to Dubai and Dubai to Cape Town flights were both over nine hours.
Although the trip was long, Canoy’s spirits are high and he has already made adjustments to the time and weather. Adjustment to the time was manageable since Cape Town is six hours behind the Philippines. The weather is also pleasant and gets colder at night.
He was met at the airport by no less than WBF President Howard Goldberg. Shortly after checking in at the official residence of all visiting boxers, he and the boxers went through the mandatory medical check-up before heading back to the hotel to rest.
They also met former world heavyweight champion Frans “White Buffalo” Botha who’ll be fighting in an exhibition match on fight night.
Among the local support Canoy received was from Filipino seamen OFWs who were in transit and were set to board their respective ships in Cape Town this week. (FREEMAN)
