Longer registration period for Sunsport basketball camp

CEBU, Philippines - The registration period for the 24th season of the Sunsport Basketball Training Camp, which takes pride for being the longest and best-run cage clinic in this side of the country, is scheduled from March 27 to April 2, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Center Sports Club just beside the Sacred Heart Church along D. Jakosalem Street, Cebu City.

The camp, which will formally kick off on April 3, is open to both male and female players at least seven years old. Entry fee is pegged at P1,300 per month inclusive of a training jersey, basketball, shoe bag and t-shirt, hence, the participants will surely get their money's worth on top of the quality training they will experience.

Under the supervision of longtime camp director Jojo Romarate, the training sessions is set from 8 to 10 a.m. for seven to 11 years old entrants, and from 11 a.m. to 12nn for 12 years old and above campers.

The first level of training, which is intended for the beginners, will run until April 28.

At this phase, Romarate, longtime head coach of the Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology, said they  will be teaching their students the fundamentals of the sport such as proper shooting, dribbling, passing, footwork and other related drills.

Stage 2 or the advanced level is calendared for May 1-26. It will still follow a format geared towards the holistic development of the participants. It covers some offensive and defensive strategies, on-court communication and other technical aspect of the sport.

Before the camp, Sunsport will hold a free seminar on basketball skills training and conditioning techniques on March 25 also at the Sacred Heart Center Sports Club.

Slated from 8 a.m to 12nn, the workshop/seminar is open to all basketball enthusiasts, Physical Education teachers, school coaches and student/athletes.

It will be handled by US-based Cebuano skills trainer and coach Jeff Codera. The pride of Tabok, Mandaue City is a member of NBA's Golden State Warriors training camp and is a licensed Gold coach of USA Basketball under its Youth Development Program.— EBV (FREEMAN)
