UC, Unit 7 maintain lead

CEBU, Philippines - The University of Cebu remained on top of the standing in the secondary level as they snared two more golds in the dancesport and table tennis yesterday in the 25th Cebu City Olympics at the Cebu City Sports Center.

UC currently has 26 golds, 18 silvers and six bronze medals.

Jeddah Marie Castaneda and Jake Emmanuel Corro delivered a gold medal for UC after winning the Latin American category while the standard gold went to University of San Carlos.

UC’s second gold came from Francis Honoridez and John Balucos who dominated the table tennis doubles event.

Honoridez and Balucos made sure they will not suffer the same fate as their female counterparts by silencing University of San Carlos' Aushim Librando and Zyrus Rabaya, 3-0, in the finals.

The secondary girls’ gold went to University of San Jose-Recoletos who defeated UC's bets, 3-1.

Defending champion USC stayed at second place with an improved 17 golds, 15 silvers and 11 bronze medals.

Aside from dancesport, USC also got golds and silvers from their tennis bets with Jan Godfrey "Noynoy" Seno winning the singles event against teammate Francis Lambayan, 8-2.

Beverly Enriquez settled in second place after bowing to Zethley Mae Alferez of Bright Academy of Unit 6, 2-8.

The tandem of Rey Moses Anda and Francis Navales also snared gold.

Unit 9 represented by the Abellana National School stayed at third place with 4-4-12 gold-silver-bronze medals. The University of the Visayas is now at the fourth spot with 3-4-1 thanks to their gymnastics bets.

In the elementary level, Unit 7 is still ahead on the standing with 18 golds, 15 silvers and five bronze medals with their gymnasts delivering three gold medals yesterday.

Unit 4 is still at the second spot with their 13 golds, five silvers and 12 bronze medals, while Unit 5 climbed to third placed with 6-8-3 gold-silver-bronze medals.

City Central School gave a big boost to Unit 5 after they scored a double victory in the table tennis double event and in the dancesport competition.

Unit 3 dropped to fourth place with 6-3-3, while Unit 8 settled for fifth place with 6-11-6.

The athletics events resume today, while the secondary football finals between the Don Bosco Technology Center and Paref Springdale School will start at 3pm. (FREEMAN)
