CEBU, Philippines - The University of San Carlos claimed an early lead in this year’s Cebu City Olympics after winning the overall championship in the swimming event at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.

After two days of action in the pool, the Carolinians hauled 15 golds, seven silvers and seven bronze medals.

USC got a big boost from their elementary squad with five golds, eight silvers and five bronzes. Maria Montessori International School-led Unit 8 registered 5-8-5 and Unit 7 came up with 3-1-1.

Unit 6 got a gold, three silvers and four bronzes, Bright Academy with two golds, three silvers and a bronze, UC with a silver and a bronze and St.Theresa's College with a gold.

However, UC led by Karen Mae Indaya ruled the secondary level with 11 golds, nine silvers and five bronzes.

Indaya got five individual gold medals with her last two events won against long-time rival Lyh Ann Navarro of Cebu Eastern College.

USC trailed UC with 7-4-5 gold-silver-bronze finish, while Paref Springdale ended with three golds and a silver as Bright Academy nabbed three golds.

The Cebu City Olympics will go full blast next week but some events have been staged early as Team Cebu City will be leaving for Antique next week for their campaign in the Visayas qualifying leg of the Philippine National Games.—Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (FREEMAN)
