Cebuano karatekas sizzle in Surigao joust

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – A lean, but mean Team Cebu came out third overall in the 1st Mayor Ernesto T. Matugas 'Bonok Bonok Festival Karatedo Invitational Cup' over the weekend at the Parkway Mall in Surigao City.

Coach Larry Avila said all his four karatekas won golds spiced up with three silvers and one bronze, enough for them to land at a decent third place.

Warlito Ponteros of Cansojong National High School led Cebu's charge with a double gold in the junior and senior kata competition. He also grabbed a bronze in the -55kgs. kumite.

University of Cebu's Joshua Phillip Famador snared gold in the -60kgs. kumite and a silver in the senior men's kata.

Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu's Rennier Angelo Cruz delivered Cebu's fourth gold via the men's -70kgs. kumite. He also settled for silver in the 15-year-old kata event.

Cebu's remaining silver medal was handed over by University of San Carlos' Kimberly Mosqueda Gealan in the senior women's kata. (FREEMAN)
