Historic Pinoy Pride event in US is now ‘Philippines vs the World’
CEBU, Philippines – From 'Filipinos Contra Latinos', the first ever Pinoy Pride show in the United States will now be known as the "Philippines vs the World". The historic event will take place at the StubHub Center in Carson City, California on October 17.
"With the encouraging reception the event has been getting, we are working to involve and cater a wider scope of audience, involving more countries and working for a bigger show as we make our debut in the boxing mecca of the world. We are formally announcing the updated Pinoy Pride 33 event title, "Philippines vs the World"," said ALA Promotions in an official statement.
The ground-breaking fightcard will be headlined by two-division world champion Donnie ‘Ahas’ Nietes (36-1-4, 21KOs), who will be defending his WBO light flyweight title against Mexican champion Juan 'Pinky' Alejo (21-3, 13KOs).
Alejo is unbeaten since December 2009. He is on a 21-fight winning streak in that nearly six-year span.
That would make an interesting fight as Nietes has not also dropped a single fight for 11 years now. He is on a hot roll after snaring the WBO 105-pound crown with a 12-round shutout decision over the previously unbeaten Thai champ Pornsawan Porpramook on September 30, 2007 at the Waterfront-Cebu City Hotel and Casino, making him the longest reigning Filipino world boxing champion.
Aside from Nietes, celebrated brothers ‘Prince’ Albert (24-0, 17KOs) and Jason ‘El Nino’ Pagara (36-3, 22KOs) and rising ALA star Mark ‘Magnifico” Magsayo (11-0, 9KOs) will also see action in the maiden venture of ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN on US soil.
They will all leave for the US in the second week of September to continue their rigid training regimen at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach in Los Angeles. — EBV (FREEMAN)
