CEBU, Philippines – Kenyan Joseph Mururi and Ruffa Sorongon topped their respective categories in the premiere 21-kilometer division of the 21K Uphill Rush in the city of Naga, Cebu.

Mururi, who ruled the Talisay City Marathon two weeks ago, defeated Michael Largo for the top spot, while Naga's hometown bet Bonifacio Monjas settled for third despite being hobbled by cramps.

In the distaff side, Sorongon snared the crown after edging out Saralee Cuizon. Former top triathlete Amale Mendezona-Jopson took the third place honors.

In the men's 12K, Mururi's compatriot Kilimo Cheruiyot took home the champion's trophy. Chobie Duenas wound up second followed by Elmer Bartolo.

The top three in the women's 12K battle were Cherry Andrin, Michelle Beboso, and Hazel Busa.

CESAFI athletics triple gold medallist Prince Joey Lee hit the road again and ruled the 5K race as Robert Daang and Florendo Lapiz landed at second and third, respectively.

In the women's 5K, the little-known Wendelyn Tampos Tecson outsmarted Lovely Fe Andrin for the top spot, while Mary Denzyll Glonzon came out third.

Organized by running group Team Kombati, the event was among the highlights of the eighth Charter Day anniversary of the city on September 5. Part of its proceeds will be donated to the local government for the purchase of wheelchairs for persons with disabilities. (FREEMAN)
