Cebu teams in championship of Visayas SBP Passerelle Finals

Rico S. Navarro - The Freeman

ROXAS City, Philippines – Cebu teams play for championship in both the SBP and Passerelle divisions for an eighth straight year at the  Visayas Regional Finals of the 2014 BEST SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament 2014 sponsored by Milo.

In the Small Basketeers Philippines division, USC trounced St. John’s Institute of Bacolod, 53-38, then cruised past Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion of Roxas, 72-21, to score a sweep in the classification round of the tournament.

The Baby Warriors will face Ateneo de Iloilo in the championship game in a rematch of the nail-biting classification round game which USC won by the skin of their teeth, 31-30. Ateneo de Iloilo bounced back from that loss to dump Purisima, 74-27, and then overcame St. John’s Institute of Bacolod, 38-31, to go 2-1.

The UV Passerelle team staged a showdown with Hua Siong College of Iloilo after trashing Purisima of Roxas, 56-21, for its second straight win. Hua Siong also scored a second straight win as they scraped past University of St. La Salle Bacolod, 43-36.

Since UV and Hua Siong are both tied at 2-0 with a game left, their non-bearing classification round game is canceled and they will play for the championship. Cebu seeks to maintain its dominance of the Visayas in the SBP Passerelle tournament, with its teams playing in the championship games of the SBP and Passerelle divisions since 2007.

Cebu has won the Passerelle championship from 2008 to 2013, while the SBP championship has been shared among Cebu, Bacolod and Iloilo over the same period. The champions of the Visayas Regional Finals will represent the Visayas at the national finals December 13-14 at the Magis Eagles Arena at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu. (FREEMAN)
