Polog dethrones Garing, reaches finals in Consolacion fiesta hoop

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – Barangay Polog unleashed a furious endgame offensive to stun defending champion Garing in masterful fashion, 53-39, to advance into the finals of the Inter-Barangay Category B of the Mayor Teresa P. Alegado Cup 2014 Fiesta Basketball League.

Polog, thus, arranged a championship duel with the twice-to-beat  Lanipga, while relegating Garing to only a battle for third place.

Polog actually trailed for most of the way and was even down by six after three quarters, 31-37, but it made a 360-degree turn in the final period to fluster Garing at the final buzzer.

In the Inter-Barangay Category A, Pulpogan bested the equally-tough Cansaga in overtime to book a semifinal date against the winner of the Lamac-Jugan duel on Sunday. Nangka, which also advanced to the semis after  beating Jugan, 58-49, will face next either Cansaga, Casili or Cabangahan for a championship spot.

In the quarterfinals of the SK division, Pulpogan blasted Tugbongan, 68-52, while Jugan slammed Lamac, 63-50.

Serving as one of the highlights of Consolacion's annual fiesta celebration in honor of their beloved patron San Narciso, the month-long tournament is highly supported by Mayor Teresa P. Alegado, Vice Mayor Rey Damole and the rest of the Sanggunian Bayan members. Councilor Nilo Ferraren is the sports committee chairman assisted by Boy Tibon and Liga ng mga Barangay President Marilou P. Casul.

The games are supervised by sports commssioner Paul Alelu Q. Flores, a former varsity of the Far Eastern University during his collegiate days. (FREEMAN)
