Lemuel P. Maglinte - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – Aguelo A. Singwangcha of Maasin City scored a scintillating ninth round stoppage over Bonnie Makiling of Bukidnon to wrest the Asian Boxing Federation super featherweight title the other night in the main event of the “Pinaksitay sa Talisay” fight card at the Talisay City Sports Complex.

It was a highly entertaining brawl between the two fighters but it was Singwangcha who gained the upper hand as he connected more power punches that inflicted damage to Makiling who was unable to continue before the start of the 9th round after ring physician Jose Unabia recommended the stoppage after checking on Makiling.

Singwangcha found Makiling a tough customer to handle during the first five rounds, but the Noy Pacing Flores Gym stalwart utilized his superior boxing skills in connecting with heavy blows to the head that fagged out Makiling.

Veteran referee Tony Pesons deducted one point to Singwangcha in the fourth round after an accidental head butt that causes a cut in Makiling’s right eye, but the Maasin City fighter still gained momentum all throughout the fight as he was the busier and more accurate fighter.

Singwangcha now holds an improved 22-10 win-loss record spiked with 14KOs.Makiling, for his part, suffered his seventh career loss in 12 fights.

Aside from snaring the ABF title, the win also restored Singwangcha’s confidence and put him back on the right track after suffering a major setback losing via unanimous decision to Mexican Sergio Thompson last August 8 in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Aguelo’s stablemates from Noy Pacing Flores Gym of Mandaue City and prized wards of revered Thai boxing patron Naris Singwangcha also hurdled their respective assignments in the slambang event co-presented by Cebuano topnotch promoter Rex ‘Wakee’ Salud and Talisay City Sports Commission.

Canoy J. Singwangcha scored a masterful unanimous decision verdict against Ryan Bajala, while Boyose A. Singwangcha also survived tough Jaime Barcelona by winning via unanimous decision.

Valero G. Singwangcha kayoed Arlon Batingal in the 46 seconds of the fourth round as Tabanao J. Singwangcha dominated Jhoas Aparecion via unanimous decision.

In an unusual turn of events, the scheduled 10 round supporting main bout between Recky Dulay of Yolly Alfante Stable and Anthony Sabalde of Flores Gym was declared a no decision after the bout was cancelled due to gloves issue.

In the other matches, Jayson Nicart destroyed Jerome Baja in the second round, while Jimmy Vallares knocked out Michael Manambay in the opening round. (FREEMAN)
