UV Intramurals kicks off today

CEBU, Philippines- Inspired by the theme "United and Victorious through Sports and Academic Excellence", this year’s Intramurals celebration of the University of the Visayas will kick off today.

As an avenue to find respite in usual day-to-day school works, students, instructors and university personnel will once again witness the splendid opening salvo of the school's annual sporting spectacle filled with performances from the ever pride of the university - the UV Cheerleading Team and the Grand Palabas of UV Filipiniana Dance Group and UV Drum, Lyre and Bugle Corps.

The four-day event will start with a Eucharistic mass followed by a colourful parade of athletes, coaches and deans, students and personnel from the different participating colleges. College of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Estrella C. Navarro will deliver the opening remarks, while UV Vice President for Administration will give an inspirational message. Chris L. Mejarito, the school's athletic director, will formally declare the tournament open.

Serving as the ultimate highlight of the opening bash is the highly-anticipated search for Mr.&Ms. Intramurals 2014 to be vied by alluring gals and gorgeous lads representing the different colleges and departments in the university.

Moreover, the fun and excitement will continue as the different literary events (oration, declamation, extemporaneous, balak) will commence at the Inday Pining Teatro, while the Pinoy Games and Ball Games will also be played simultaneously at the university quadrangle and gymnasium. Other athletic events and board games (swimming, track and field, karatedo, taekwondo, scrabble, chess, dart) will be held alongside with the other academic, literary and musical events on the second day, August 28.

To highlight the third day is the pop-dance competition where talented dance crews from the different colleges will showcase their high-caliber dance prowess. Furthermore, the semifinal battle for all ball games, athletic events and board games will be played on August 30. The championship of all games as well as the announcement and awarding of winners will be on September 5, which will be graced by a finale dancesport competition.

This year's Intramurals is made even more colourful with the help of active sponsors in Globe and RC Goldline Sales Shop Corp. and with the unity and cooperation of all colleges and departments as well as the working committees involved namely PE Director Cresencio Mejarito, SDPS Coordinator Daisy Ybañez Fomocod, and SASC Director Ma.
