UC shoots for second win, UV hopes to bounce back
CEBU, Philippines- The University of Cebu Webmasters shoot for a rare back-to-back wins, but they must brace for a tough challenge against defending champion University of the Visayas Green Lancers in the 14th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) men's basketball tournament today at the Cebu Coliseum.
The UC-UV duel it set at 6:45 p.m., right after the juniors division match pitting the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles against the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers at 5:15 p.m.
The Webmasters are seeking to break a 1-0 tie with the Southwestern University Cobras, who escaped past the stubborn University of San Carlos Warriors, 69-67, last Sunday.
With UC bringing the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars downthe wire before pulling off a 100-96 overtime thriller, the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats stunning the Lancers, 67-60, and the Cobras needing just two points to turn back the Warriors, it should remind the fans that these games deserve another look in the second round.
The Webmasters, one of only two collegiate teams that did not hire foreign players (the other is CIT-U), are expected to have a bumpy ride into their 2-0 goal against the Lancers, who are aching to bounce back from their season-opening debacle to avoid what would be an improbable 0-2 start for the 11-time champions.
Meanwhile, Landry Sanjo and Mark Jayven Tallo combined for 45 points to lead Southwestern U past the vastly-improved USC. Sanjo drilled in 25 points, but Tallo was named best player of the game with 20 points spiked with six rebounds, five assists and two steals
Shooster Olago and Espoir Toyombi paced the Warriors with 17 and 14 points, respectively, while Victor Manuel Rabat added 10 markers in a losing effort.
