Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Cebuano playing coach Glenn Lava made his fellow countrymen proud after he bagged a gold medal plus a bronze at the end of the 8th World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships over the weekend in Bali, Indonesia.

Lava, together with Jean Pierre Sabido and Ernesto Guzman, Jr., spearheaded the Philippine’s victorious campaign in the over 29 or senior 2 competition. Prior to their golden performance, Lava also snatched a bronze medal in the mixed team freestyle action.

The Cebu Taekwondo Association (CTA) felt so blessed to have the very dedicated Lava with them.

Although Lava was also competing in the World Championships, he constantly monitored the training of his players that greatly paved the way for Mikeala Calamba and Rinna Babanto to emerge triumphant too.

Calamba, a varsity from the University of  San Carlos, and Babanto from Southwestern University, along with Manila’s Jocel Ley Nonobia snared the team gold in the juniors division.

Babanto said the event they joined in was a new one in the World Championships and she is so happy to be part of the team that grabbed the historic gold.

Interestingly, Calamba, Babanto and Nonobia were also the Phl squad’s first gold medal contributor.

Overall, Phl placed third out of the 51 countries who took part in the three-day tilt. (FREEMAN)
