Stage 2 of Sta. Teresa of Avila chessfest gets underway today
CEBU, Philippines - Veteran and neophyte pawnpushers in this side of the country will try to outdo each other once again in stage 2 of the Sta. Teresa of Avila Open Chess Tournament at 11 am today at the Deep Blue Cafe in SM City-Cebu.
The third phase of the 16-stage competition is scheduled on will be played on August 15. The remaining stages will be announced later by FIDE Arbiter Marvin Y. Ruelan.
Only 18 players are allowed to play in each stage. The top finisher, aside from pocketing P1,000, will advance to the finals slated on September 14-15.
The grand champion will take home P7,000, while the second placer will pocket P4,000. The losing semifinalists will receive P2,000 each, while the quarterfinalists will get P1,000. Those who will make it to the top 16 are assured of P500 apiece.
