CCSC targets world record for archery
CEBU, Philippines - After dancesport and chess, another Guinness World Record is being targeted by the Cebu City Sports Commission - archery.
This attempt will be the most challenging one as Cebu only has a handful of archers that for a long time, it's only Rosendo “Dondon†Sombrio who made it to the national team.
The current record for the world's largest archery tournament is 7,804 owned by the United States.
The CCSC, along with the Cebu Archery Club led by Dondie Joseph, is aiming to produce 10,000 participants.
“So why Guinness right away? Because it is something that is very attractive and encouraging, at the same time, you also get to hit your target of transforming the kids not only as gold medalists but a chance to better their lives. Dondon(Sombrio) here finished college because of scholarship through archery,†said CCSC chairman Edward Hayc.
For his part, Sombrio is up to the challenge even as it means more pressure for him as he has to budget his time for his work, his training with the PHL team for the Southeast Asian Games this year and training the volunteer teachers and overseeing the students’ training in the said sport.
Aside from coming up with the participants, another challenge would be the production of the equipment and other paraphernalia to be used for which is a bit expensive even on the arrows alone.
CCSC and CAC are targeting the month of November to fulfill ts GWR attempt.
In a related development, the management of SRP has already agreed to spare a portion for archery’s training and competition site. (FREEMAN)
