USC beats UV in Aboitiz bootfest
MANILA, Philippines -The University of San Carlos (USC) Golden Booters chalked up the first win in the under-23 division after they outlasted the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Booters, 1-0, in the 15th Aboitiz Cup football tournament yesterday at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Brgy. Subangdaku, Mandaue City.
John Roy Melgo knocked in the winning goal for USC with just five minutes gone by in the game.
The under-23 category is one of the toughest and most important divisions featured in the Aboitiz Cup as it will be the basis of the Cebu Football Association (CFA) in selecting athletes that will represent Cebu in future tournaments under the Philippine Football Federation (PFF).
In the girls 17 class, defending champion USC and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu posted convincing victories over separate opponents.
The Carolinians slammed the hapless Cebu International School (CIS) ladies, 9-1, while the Ateneans came up with a 5-0 thrashing of Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion-Mandaue.
In the men’s 38-above, Balliant Hawk United outsmarted Hiroshi, 1-0, while ERCO FC pummeled San Roque FC, 5-0.
In the inter-company battle, Accenture routed Wipro, 4-0, Stream beat Leylam, 1-0, while the Arkiteks United escaping past Timex-LS, 2-1. Innodata pulled off a 2-1 squeaker over Convergys-A, while Timex-BP prevailed over Convergys-B, 1-0. (FREEMAN)
