CEBU, Philippines - Reigning women's champion Mandaue City opened its title retention bid with a 2-0 shutout of Compostela at the start of the 8th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup last Saturday at the Cebu International Convention Center.
With veterans Jusabelle Brillo, Genie Sabas and Kennette Garces carrying most of their offensive load, the Mandaue volleybelles easily dismantled their rivals from Compostela in the opening set, 25-8. They found Compostela a tough customer to handle in the second set, but they still prevailed in the end via a close 25-23 decision.
The other players who figured prominently in Mandaue's victory were Mary Dominique Pacres and Janelle Cabahug.
In the other games, the Bantayan spikers hammered Bogo in the men’s play, 25-21, 24-26, 25-18, while Carcar stunned defending titlist Minglanilla, 26-24, 25-20 in the kiddies division featuring players 12 years old and under. (FREEMAN)
