Roaring Tiger

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones - The Philippine Star

Tiger Woods has overtaken Jack Nicklaus at second spot for the most number of wins in the PGA Tour. Tiger won his 74th last weekend and I can still hear his fans roar.

Just a few weeks ago, he was tied with his idol Nicklaus, whose accomplishments have been Tiger’s yardstick since he was a kid.

There is still Jack’s record of 18 Major titles that Tiger has to equal and he is four away from achieving that.

This is much harder to do, but with a renewed drive and his ability to focus on the task ahead, it won’t be a surprise that Tiger would at least match Jack’s haul of Majors.

Sam Snead has the record for the most wins in the PGA Tour with 82 in a career that spanned 30 years.

After Tiger with 74 and Jack with 73, Ben Hogan with 64 followed by Arnold Palmer with 62 are fourth and fifth in the all-time list.

Byron Nelson is sixth with 52 followed by Billy Casper with 51 and Walter Hagen with 45.

Tied for the 9th and 10th spots are Phil Mickelson and Cary Middlecoff with 40 apiece.

At 36 years old, Tiger can have many more playing years ahead if he takes care of his body and avoids distractions.

The taking care of his body is the easy part. I don’t know about avoiding distractions.

The 11th La Salle-Ateneo Golf Classic Cebu will tee off tomorrow in another province.

For the first time in its history, the event will be played in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, but retained Cebu in the title.

The tournament pits the golfing skills of the alumni of the two schools and their affiliates.

The change of venue is a strategy for Team La Salle as Bacolod is known as a lair of La Sallians.

The Ateneans said that the La Salle side should not be too sure about wresting the title this year as their alumni would not just allow the Green Archers to win it all.

I will have to follow the tournament through its Facebook page and via text messages and phone calls from friends.

If you are still wondering for which side I would be rooting in the tournament above, here is an announcement that I would like to share.

Calling all alumni of De la Salle Andres Soriano Memorial College (formerly ASMS in Toledo City), you are invited to attend the alumni homecoming on July 15 at the school grounds.

Bring your family and friends and participate in the formation of a human La Sallian star.

Registration fee is P100 per person and the proceeds will help send a child to school. Please wear green.
