Silent scream

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones - The Philippine Star

There were lots of fist pumping, teeth clenching, silent groans and moans, and sighs of relief at dawn last Monday.

This might as well have been a scene from a silent movie, but what can a football fanatic do when the rest of the people at home were still deep in slumber while you were up watching the final match of Euro 2012.

Since the other football fan in the house was still sleeping as waking him would mean he might doze off in school later in the day, I had to contend with pumping my fist when Spain scored or when Iker Casillas saved an attempt by the Italians.

I know football is more fun to watch if you hear the ambience of the stadium and you cheer loudly, but propriety tells us not to make so much of a ruckus or we wake the whole house if not also the whole neighborhood.

I hope those who were rooting for Italy feel the same. Hehehe…

If I were to pick a most valuable player for that final match, I would pick Casillas.

Maybe I am biased having played goalkeeper in my younger days and more than five years ago when I played again and retired for good, but his performance in the match proved his caliber not only as a player, but more importantly as team leader of Spain.

Somebody asked me about the team's chances of defending the World Cup title in Brazil two years from now.

That is still to far away to think of as so many things can happen in the next two years.

If there is something else aside from top caliber football that I am very excited about in the Brazil world Cup, it is the time that the games would be aired live of television, which would be in the morning here in our country.

This time we can cheer loudly unless of course you have to be at work.

Well, the pay as a sportswriter may not be much, but watching these games is part of our work. Sportswriting is surely a lot of fun.

This Saturday, members of the Philippine Society for Industrial Security (PSIS)-7 will have a general assembly with a major twist.

There would be a firearms familiarization activity to be held at the Sphinx Gun Club Indoor Range inside Camp Lapu-lapu. This is backed by Aboitiz Equity Ventures, which is giving free ammunition for the first 50 to sign up.

Registration fee is only P250 and that also covers lunch.

Our president Atty. Michelle Mendez-Palmares is calling on security professionals to attend this activity.
