More golf events

Still hung over after the 5th Albino D. Gothong Memorial Golf Tournament or the Amo Cup, two more events were held starting yesterday and while we sincerely hoped to support them by taking part, it has become physically impossible.

This is where the saying that work affects our golfing comes to play. The problem is, if we don't work, we won't have enough to pay for our golf game, so work it is.

I did manage to be at Alta Vista Golf and Country Club yesterday to be with our Korean friends, who were holding the 4th Cebu Korean Association President's Cup.

The tournament is meant to foster closer ties not only among the Cebu-based Koreans, but also among them and the local community.

The other day, I also met some guys from the Korean media including Seoul-based Hwa-Young Nam, senior editor of Golf Digest Korea.

Also there were Jaekyoon 'Damien' Park of the Cebu Korean News and Rey Yu of www.uknews.com. They interviewed officers of Alta Vista as part of efforts to help promote the club to their countrymen.

They were accompanied by Joseph Shin, who is a member of AVGCC and the vice president of the Cebu Korean Association.

On our end, there were AVGCC Chairman Oly Dychangco, treasurer Ramon Sebastian, director Inting Go, management committee vice chairman Atty. Arsenio Tan, and this deadline beater.

Among the topics we discussed were how to foster better relations through the game and how to improve relations among Filipinos and Koreans.

Although I still have 13 more years to go before I make the grade, I got a call from Ben Villamor yesterday inviting me to be their guest in the Open Seniors Golf Tournament, which tees off today at Cebu Country Club.

This is a two-day, 18-hole event backed by the Philippine Sports Commission.

I would say that although I am not a member of CCC, the way I play the game seems more suited to the layout of their course and invitations to play there are always welcome, but not this time.

Entry fee for the tournament is P1,500 and there would be prizes for the top finishers of four categories - Classic (55-59 years old), Elite (60-64), Statesmen (65-69), and Vintage (70-above).

Good luck to all participants.

I was informed yesterday that there would also be a special event this Saturday at the Mactan Island Golf Club for the Peemayers in Cebu.

Col. Raul Farnacio, chief of staff of Central Command, said that this will be a team event.

The different teams are Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, and the Cebu Squad.

Tee off time is 0630H. See you there.
