Golf for fun; Spurs for real

Seven-under-par 65 wasn’t enough to win for the Globe GTour Cebu played at alta Vista Golf and Country Club last Tuesday.

After shooting four-under-par on the back nine, where my team that also had Manuel ‘Maning’ Go, Sabino ‘Ben’ Dapat, and Dennis Segura started, we thought we were doing everything right knocking in birdies on the 1st and the 2nd holes to start off our second nine.

Since the four-man scramble event required players to do certain things, players were required to tee off on the par-3 2nd using a pitching wedge.

I know a few people, who can hit their pitching wedge quite far, but to the normal golfer it is for distances between 100 to 110 yards.

After the three right handed players of our team hit our tee shots that were all short of the green, Dennis, a lefty, nailed what could be the shot of the day for our team, after he skulled his shot and almost aced the hole.

The sliding tee box made the tournament more competitive as after a team scores a birdie or better, the group moves one tee box backward until they reach the blue tees, which are the farthest back.

Boboy Romero of Globe Business told the participants during the award rites that he was very impressed with the scores of the Cebu event with the worst team shooting even-par 72 strokes.

Boboy’s team beat mine and two others in the countback for second place honors in division 1.

The winning team fired nine-under-par. It was fun though and the weather was great until we were done with the event.

I’m looking forward to similar tournaments in the future.

At the start of the NBA Playoffs, many have written off the San Antonio Spurs as a team that is too old to win.

Those who wrote them off can eat their words as the Spurs have won 20 straight games since the late part of the regular season early April until the first two games of the Western Conference finals.

Who says they are old?

My friend and fellow UP Cebu High School alumnus Siynp Silagan said on my Facebook wall yesterday, “The San Antonio Spurs are so OLD, they have Alzheimers – they FORGOT how to lose.”

I hope this continues, but while I am optimistic, I also have to accept reality that no winning streaks would last forever. In the case of the Spurs, I’d be very happy if they can win their next six games before the streak ends, because by then they shall have already won the NBA title.

To those who think the Spurs still don’t make the cut, you surely have a very high standard. You could be an ideal government official or maybe not as you are not in touch with reality hehehe…
