Carcel seizes lead in KOY race
CEBU, Philippines - Tonyo Carcel is back in his old, deadly form, seizing not only the second leg's KT 100 expert title but also the driver's seat in the 'Karter of the Year' race of the 2012 Kartzone Superkart Series over the weekend at the Kartzone Racing Circuit.
After two legs, Carcel has accumulated a total of 89 points making him the front-runner for the KOY award.
Another top-rated karter in Jette Calderon stayed at second spot with 77 points, while erstwhile leader Joseph Rojo was relegated to third place with 68 points.
Running fourth and fifth were Sean Velasco with 39 points and JT Gullas with 38 points.
During the second leg dubbed as "Surgical Precision", Carcel logged the best time of 27.30 seconds in the final heat. He posted a time of 11:25.721 out of 25 laps being contested, way ahead of Calderon, who clocked in 11:27.956. Gullas placed third in 11:40.674.
Rojo's younger brother Vince made up for his kuya's misfortunes especially in the final heat by posting back-to-back victories in the KT novice class.
Vince outpaced Kali Carcel for the top spot, while Peter Edward Lim wound up third.
In the KT masters, Panpan Reroma outsmarted Regan King to clinch the title. Regan's sons Renzo and Rex had a good time though after Renzo placed second to Rap-Rap Gutierrez in the SQ cadet and Rex finished third in the mini ROK category won by Liam Sacal.
In the the equally-exciting Formula Honda race, Kartzone's Kym Limgenco and Clive Fermin ruled their respective classes.
Limgenco bagged the novice title after edging out Derek Arculli and Hans Octobre, while Fermin came out the fastest in the experts division followed by Lord Seno.—(FREEMAN)
