Opao, Guizo dominate Mandaue chessfest

CEBU, Philippines - Barangays Opao and Guizo ruled the chess event of the 5th Mayor’s Cup Sports Festival over the weekend at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

Behind the efforts of Bon Tibod, Redemptor Nailon and Ruben Ngujo, Team Opao hauled 16 points to clinch the title in the inter-barangay open category that went along with the P10,000 cash prize.

Pagsabungan, manned by Ramsey Pedrosa, Renaldo Flores, Diego Claro, copped the second place honors with 14 points, while Subangdaku place third with 10 points from the Torres brothers Silverstein, King James and Guillermo.

Paknaan’s Eden Diano and the Tenio siblings Samuel and Julito claimed the fourth spot with nine points.

Pagsabungan got P7,000, while Subangdaku and Paknaan received P4,000 and P2,000, respectively, for their efforts.

Guizo, on the other hand, topped the inter-youth division with eight points, thanks to the efforts of the Claro brothers Diego and Jethro along with Dwight Bentulan.

Paknaan B nailed seven points to finish second, while Subangdaku and Paknaan A occupied the third and fourth spots.

Guizo took home P5,000, while the second to fourth pocketed P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000.

Spearheaded by the Mandaue City Sports Commission (MCSC), the two-month sportsfest is among the highlights of Mandaue's annual fiesta on May 7-8 in honor of its beloved patron St. Joseph.
