Koncz: Mayol won't fight overweight Mexican foe
CEBU, Philippines - Cebuano boxer Rodel "Batang Mandaue" Mayol is supposed to challenge WBA flyweight champion Hernan "Tyson" Marquez today (Philippine time) at the Centro de Usos Multiples in Ciudad Obregon, Sorona, Mexico but it appears that the match will no longer happen as the Mexican failed to make weight.
Mayol's Canadian agent Michael Koncz told Rick Reeno of boxingscene.com that they won't proceed with the fight as Marquez exceeded two pounds the division weight limit of 112 pounds in his first three attempts.
Although Marquez, who was stripped down to nothing, allegedly made weight during his fourth attempt,
Koncz insisted that there's no way the Mexican would weigh in at exactly 112 pounds.
"I don't believe he is 112-pounds. Mayol came in right on 112-pounds. Then Marquez came on and had about 30 guys with him. I complained to the WBA's representative and to the commission that he doesn't need that many guys on the stage. They didn't listen to me. Then he's on the scale, and then one of the commission guys said he was overweight by 1 kilo. Then seconds later he stepped on the scale again and I told them that I can see that his feet are hanging halfway over the front of the scale, the towel is pulling on the front of the [scale]. And they said that he was still overweight," Koncz was quoted by Reeno.
Koncz did complain to the WBA representative and the local boxing commission only to be told that it was already too late for Marquez to weigh in for the fifth time as he had already started drinking water.
"The one commissioner told the other commission guys to get out the way. He came on a third time. I told them his feet are hanging off again. Then came the fourth time and they said he made weight. So what happened to the one kilo he was over? This all transpired in 2 and half to three minutes. I complained to the WBA's guy that there were too many guys on the stage and the towel was pulling on the scale and there were guys behind him touching him and stuff. I talked to the commission, I wanted everyone off the stage. Bring back the fighter plus two and have him make weight. They said 'it's too late, he already drank water," said Koncz in the same internet report.
Under the circumstances that are apparently to their disadvantage, Koncz said he won't allow Mayol to go on with the bout.
"As it stands at this moment, I'm not going to jeopardize [my fighter]. With the contract, the fight is at 112-pounds for the title. Mayol made that weight and he worked very hard. As it stands at this moment, I am not going to proceed with the fight. We've been in Mexico six times. I have a lot of respect for the Mexican commission. We've never had a problem before and never complained before. But this city, the commission here, I have no respect for," said Koncz.
Unless a positive development will crop up, the bout is called off as of this writing yesterday. (FREEMAN)
