CEBU, Philippines - The latest batch of alumni from the Seniors Class of 2012 made their graduation sweeter as they topped the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Alumni Association Football Festival over the weekend.
The new graduates defeated Team 2010, 2-1, in extra time after topping the elimination round and the semifinals at the SHS-Ateneo de Cebu field in Brgy. Canduman, Mandaue City.
Keefe Yap worked with Pompom Veloso and Vinson Nery on a neat trick play to score on a free kick for a 1-0 lead before Team 2010 replied with a goal in the second half.
With the game ending at 1-all in regulation, Yap converted the game-winning goal in the fifth minute of extra time to seal the win.
Team 2012 went 4-1 in the elimination round, defeating all its opponents before bowing to Dads United via penalty shootout. They headed into the semis as the top seed, followed by Dads United (3-2), Team 2010 (3-2), Team 2007 Shaolin Soccer (3-2), Team 2006/2007 (2-3) and Team 2012-B (0-5).
Team 2010 nipped Dads United, 2-1, via penalty shootout in the semifinals, while Team 2012 ousted Team 2007 Shaolin Soccer, 2-0, to clinch the other final ticket.
The event is the first of a series of quarterly festivals that the SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Alumni Association is organizing for its football-loving alumni. The next festival is set in May. - (THE FREEMAN)
