Impersonator
While I’m amused of what happened in Tagbilaran City last week, I’m sure a lot of Boholanos are fuming mad. Well, who would’nt be, it was a chance for them to witness their very own Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista trade blows with a fearsome Mexican fighter Genaro Garcia (no relation to former president Carlos Garcia who incidentally hailed from Bohol). Well, it was too late when promoters headed by Michael Aldeguer noticed that the Genaro Garcia who arrived was an Impersonator este.... impostor. I’m an Elvis impersonator but I make it a point to do justice to the King or else he will be turning in his grave in Graceland. The Genaro Garcia who touched down in Bohol was not the same boxer who has fought eight world champions and was expected to give Boom Boom a hard time. However the fake Garcia was unmasked as having only 10 wins and 11 loses contrary to his claim of 38 wins (22 ko’s) and 8 loses. Despite the fiasco, and a sure losing venture, ALA Promotions continued with the bout and had the event free to the public while those who bought tickets had refunds. So what happened during fight night ? Well, Boom Boom hesitated to castigate the impostor but decided to end it quickly as he knocked out the lemon in just 1:24 of the second round. My good friend Bunny Pages of Mooon Cafe said it was a disgrace to boxing. Friends asked me if the owner of Mooon Cafe is from Bohol? “M,O,O,O pa ga jud, M, dajon”.
BDM 102 ULTRAMARATHON
Before he left for Manila to join the 2012 Bataan Death March Ultramarathon , Al Santos a PAL security personnel said he got a lot of butterflies in his stomach and wondered if he could finish 102 kilometers. Although he has finished 65 kilometers in the Coast to Coast Labor Day Ultramarathon, Al said he’s still recovering from a minor injury. I told him to just start slow and listen to his body but never force the issue if he felt bad. And as my parting words I said, “May the force be with you”. Well, Al texted me after the race that he finished in 15 hours to place 58th over-all. Other Cebuanos who completed the Ultra race were Doc Willy Estepa who came in at 15th place and Reno Enopia who wound up in 51st place. Congratulations guys! See you on April 29th for the Second Edition of the Coast to Coast Ultramarathon from Cebu Provincial Capitol to the old Toledo City Hall passing the Transcentral Highway. Registration is now in full swing at RUNNR Ayala.
Notes:
Our deepest condolences to Cebu Executive Runners Club member Rudy Tindugan for the untimely demise of his wife Cecilia. Before Rudy got hooked to running he was an arnis/kali disciple and a black belt in judo.
