CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Doctors' University (CDU) might be considered as one of the underdogs in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) but it doesn't prevent the school from its pursuit of athletic excellence by adding lawn tennis and taekwondo in its roster of teams for this year's 12th CESAFI season.
“I only have two players for lawn tennis last year that's why I did not allow them to play. Now that we already have enough players, we will be joining the CESAFI this season," said CDU athletic director Cathy Vestil. "With regards to taekwondo, we already have identified some potential bets."
In the 2011 season of Cebu's premiere school-based league, CDU only participated in badminton, table tennis, chess, scrabble and volleyball.
In volleyball, the Spiking Lady Stallions have improved a lot. That is mainly because of their prized recruits that raised their level of competitiveness.
“I really want to field in players in all CESAFI events but I guess we’re not yet ready since we’re not that competitive. But hopefully in future tournaments, we would already excel,” she added.
Vestil added that she will soon write a letter requesting the CDU management to grant athletic scholarship to its outstanding athletes.
Vestil disclosed that they also plan to re-establish their basketball varsity. - THE FREEMAN
