SWU to revive men's volleyball team for CESAFI

CEBU, Philippines - Inspired by the success of its women's volleyball program, the Southwestern University (SWU) has decided to once again put up a men's team for the 12th season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Association, Inc. (CESAFI) set to kick off this August.

SWU athletic director Ryan Aznar said it was the school's decision to revive the men's team they disbanded in 2002.

“It’s the prerogative of the management to put up a team and I guess it’s time already to have one since our women’s team is doing well,” said Aznar, referring to the reigning CESAFI grandslam champion SWU Lady Cobras.

To start the ball rolling for its new venture, SWU will tap the services of fresh high school graduates from different schools here in Cebu. They also hired Jason Gabales to call the shots for the team and Philippine Team coach Sammy Acaylar as consultant.

“We have to recruit the best of the best among the graduating students so that we will be competitive enough. We decided to get them because there’s more competition in high school. It would be easy then for them to adjust in the collegiate level of play. Also, there's a lot of room for them to improve their skills, " said Aznar.  (FREEMAN)
