Lim-Pizarro team wins; Garcia-Ledesma shines
CEBU, Philippines - Wellington Lim and Danny Pizarro proved that long-time partnerships pay off as they bagged the overall title in the 31st Coral Invitational, which closed at the Cebu Country Club yesterday.
Lim and Pizarro fired a total of 166 points on rounds of 78 and 88. In the opening round, Lim fired 43 points while Pizarro struggled with a 35.
In their second round, both players scorched the fairways and greens with rounds of eight-under-par 44 points apiece for 88 to run away with the crown. Lim and Pizarro have been partners in this tournament for the last 15 years.
The tournament is the annual signature event of CCC and follows a two-man, member-guest format using the Modified Stableford Scoring System.
The overall lowest gross title went to the tandem of Bayani Garcia and Ludwig Ledesma with 134 points on rounds of 65 and 69.
Garcia was very consistent shooting four-under-par 40 points on both days while Ledesma made 25 and 29 points.
First runner-up honors went to the tandem of Jack Jamero and Jepthe Romea with a two-day total of 161 points on rounds of 80 and 81. They won it via the countback over two other teams.
Second runner-up was the all-Japanese duo of Kochi Horii and Akio Ueda, which also combined for 161 points on rounds of 82 and 79. They also won the higher honor via the countback.
First round leaders Jonji Chiongbian and Gassy Lizares settled for the third runner-up honors also with 161 points on rounds of 84 and 77.
Fourth runner-up honors went to the all-lawyer duo of Tito Pintor and Marlou Cugtas with a total of 160 points on rounds of 78 and 82.
Fifth runner-up was the tandem of Gerry Glen Saw and Gerry Sy with 159 points on rounds of 80 and 79 points.
SENIORS
The title for this category, which is for teams with total ages of 120 years old and above, went to the tandem of Lor Alaan and Edwin Espina with a total of 157 points on rounds of 80 and 77.
First runner-up was the team of Edwin Medalle and Bobby Ramos with 156 while second runner-up was the team of Bebot Baldemor and Choie Ramos with 152 points.
INDIVIDUAL
Bayani Garcia also bagged the best gross score of the tournament with his two-day total of 80 points on identical rounds of 40.
Washington ‘Wally’ Lim took the lowest net plum with rounds of 46 and 45 for a total of 91 points. - (THE FREEMAN)
