Folayang pounds Brazilian foe
CEBU, Philippines - Gone in 56 seconds.
Eduard ‘Landslide’ Folayang of Team Lakay Wushu showed to Cebuano fans why he is considered as the country's top MMA fighter after he pounced Brazilian Muay Thai specialist Wadson ‘Knockout’ Texteira in less than a minute during last Saturday night's Colt 45-presented Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) Cebu 7:Dominate at the jampacked Cebu International Convention Center (CICC).
Folayang needed just 56 seconds to finish off Texteira with a vicious ground-and-pound strategy that forced his hapless foe to wave the white flag of surrender.
Texteira, a Brazilian based in Thailand, displayed excellent kickboxing skills but the Asian Games and SEA Games wushu gold medallist Folayang didn't back down.
Texteira managed to send Folayang down with a quick left jab and tried to hammer the Filipino warrior with a guillotine choke, but Folayang gallantly kept his guard and avoided being forced into submission.
Using his superior strength, Folayang perfectly mounted on Texteira before unleashing a barrage of punches that was too much of a punishment for the Brazilian visitor.
“Hindi rin madaling kalaban (Texteira) pero nakuha natin,” said the 27-year-old former high school teacher in Mountain Province.
In the supporting bout, Cebuano Cary “The Prince” Bullos reclaimed lost glory after he snatched the URCC Visayas bantamweight title by stopping Tinagan warrior Rex ‘T-Rex’ De Lara in 40 seconds of the second round.
It was a hard-earned win for Bullos as De Lara proved to be a tough customer to handle.
But the 30-year-old Bullos from Sel-Def MMA in Lapu-Lapu City stuck to his game plan to eventually outmuscled De Lara with a swift guillotine choke.
In the other title match, Victor ‘Gladiator’ Torre frustrated Yaw-Yan ArDigma fighter Geronio ‘El Matador’ Etac to clinch the URCC Visayas pinweight belt.
Etac’s striking was superior, but the Bacolod City-native Torre brought the game to the ground and managed to slip his legs into position for an armbar that forced Etac to tap out at the 6:17 mark of the first round.
In the other bouts, Brazilian Jui-jitsu practitioner Jonathan Sumogat beat Renan NobleFranca of Yaw-Yan ArDigma by submission at 2:19 of the first round, Jimmy Yabo stopped Urtych Alarin in just 24 seconds,
Roel ‘Akiyama’ Rosauro mauled Bullet Fighting System’s Arnel Ylanan at 9:09 of the first round, Vaugh ‘Spawn’ Donaire of DEFTA Cebu made shortwork of Hans Christian Lamanilao of Butuan Extreme MMA, while Alde De Soza scored a TKO victory over Samuel Estandarti of Iloilo Fighting System at 23 seconds of the opening round. - (THE FREEMAN)
