Mayweather tweets a dream

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

I am writing this column two hours before I am set to tee off for the 31st Coral Invitational, an event, which is held to coincide with the Sinulog celebration.

Although a year younger than the Sinulog celebration, the Coral also has a very rich tradition that golfers from other parts of the country and the world come here for this time of the year.

Being in town for the Sinulog celebration has, of course, become a bonus that many look forward to.

I hope the weather cooperates for the final two days of the tournament, but I am honestly not very hopeful listening to the forecast of the weather bureau.

On the bright side, I am considering this as my preparation for tomorrow’s grand parade where I’d have to walk the wet streets to take pictures.

Floyd Mayweather tweeting his latest challenge to fight Manny Pacquiao seems to have brought to life many fight fans, who are looking forward to this clash of the “titans”.

More than a real challenge, it sounds more like an honest-to-goodness publicity stunt for Mayweather, who will be spending time behind bars as his way to prepare for the bout that he wants to happen on May 5.

One of the most famous boxers, who spent time in jail, is Muhamad Ali, who refused to be drafted to fight during the Vietnam War.

The circumstances behind Ali going behind bars and Mayweather’s are worlds apart.

I don’t think something will come out of this most recent challenge that was made via Twitter.

Maybe just a lot of talk and publicity, but a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather bout might just remain a dream that boxing fans will have to pursue via video games.

I am happy to learn that the schedule problem for the opening match of Cebu’s Queen City United Football Club in Division 2 of the United Football League, which was originally set today, has been moved to the 21st.

QCU, which took part in the UFL Cup last year and lost all its games, was relegated to Division 2 along with the other teams that also did not fare well in that event.

Had the UFL not granted the request of QCU to postpone its first game, it would have been another major blow to the Cebuanos, who also had their first game in the UFL Cup postponed.

The cost of sending the team to Manila for a weekend is estimated to be P200,000, which covers not only the plane tickets but also the billeting and the food of the team members, among others.

Many are hopeful that we are now in Division 2 and with more time to prepare, QCU will fare so much better and make Cebu proud.

There has also been talk about holding some of the UFL games in Cebu. This should be something that Cebuano football fans can look forward to.

MILESTONES: Happy birthday greetings to one of my closest friends from our college days, Atty. Vicente ‘Inting’ E. Fernandez II, who turns a year older today.

The same goes to Julius R. Ybarita, Michael Gambito, Quinito Moras, Madonna Ponce, and Ina Amor-Mejia.

Advance greetings to those celebrating tomorrow like my niece Nikaela Randi Quiñones and one of my grade school teachers, Madame Maritess Soco-Syparrado.

More power to all of you and Pit Senyor!
