RTM-La Salle rules Mandaue volleyball

CEBU, Philippines - The RTM-La Salle belles beat the Philippine Army in a five-set thriller to win the championship of the Baybayon, Looc, Mandaue City Volleyball Open the other night at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

The Philippine Army of coach Rico de Guzman made an impressive start as they took control of the first set, 25-22, behind the powerful attacks of the Carolino sisters Mayette and Michelle along with Mary Jean Balse, Joanne Bunag and Dahlia Cruz.

However, the Fr. Rolando T. Manayon-mentored RTM-La Salle came raging with solidified defenses and exemplary attacks to take the second set in dominating fashion, 25-13, courtesy of April Rose Hingpit, Sheryl June Denila, Patty Jane Orendain, Royce Quijano, Janice Dolar, Rebbie Delotindo and Gretchel Soltones of Pajo National High School (PNHS).

The Shakey’s V-League Open champion went back into shape to take the third frame, 25-19, but RTM-La Salle bounced back in the fourth set, 25-16, to forge a rubbermatch.

In the deciding set, both squads went through a see-saw battle causing five deadlocks, the last was at 10-all. Mayette Carolino and Mary Jean Balse poured in two unconquerable attacks to the Philippine Army’s advantage, 12-10.

But that was the best PA could muster as RTM-La Salle scored five straight points to seal the deal.

In the battle for third, Mandaue City fended off Southwestern University (SWU) Lady Cobras, 25-12, 25-11, 25-15.

For winning the title, RTM-La Salle pocketed P30,000, while the second and third took home P15,000 and P10,000, respectively.

The event was among the highlights of the annual fiesta of Baybayon, Looc in honor of their beloved Mother of Perpetual Help. (FREEMAN)
