Sinulog Fun Run, softball tourney fire off today

CEBU, Philippines - Two sporting events that are part of the Sinulog Cup, running and softball, will take place today in two separate venues.

Over a thousand runners are expected to see action in the 2nd Sinulog Fun Run starting and ending at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The course of the 5-kilometer race is patterned after that of the Sinulog carousel route.

On the other hand, the men’s open softball formally kicks off at Labangon Elementary School grounds.

A total of 14 teams will slug it out for supremacy.

The fun run and softball tournament are being done this this month since there are still other sports titls that have been lined up in-line with the Sinulog festival. The rest are football and chess.

The 2nd Sinulog Football Cup will kick off on January 7 simultaneously at the University of San Carlos-Technological Center in Brgy. Talamban and San Roque Parish field in Brgy., Subangdaku, Mandaue, while chess will take place on January 21-22.

Cebu City will make another attempt for a Guinness record for the world's largest chess tournament. The record is currently held by Russia with 1,214 participants in an event organized by Eugenie Kuznitsov on June 2, 2007 at the central city park in Krasnoyarsk.  (FREEMAN)
