Anasta shocks Arcilla

- Caecent No-ot Magsumbol -

CEBU, Philippines - Elbert “Onyok” Anasta reigned supreme in the 4th Jacob Lagman Masters’ Cup after pulling an upset victory over the country’s No. 1 Johnny Arcilla, 7-6, 6-4, at the Cebu Country Club yesterday.

Arcilla, however, managed to win the doubles title as he paired off with Jacob Lagman to beat Anasta and Manila-based Cebuano Roel Capangpangan.

After losing the first set via a tie break, Arcilla tried to regain his composure in the second, but could not muster enough strength to reverse the outcome.

“Isa itong napaka-gandang pamasko ni Johnny sa akin,” Anasta said after the battle.

Arcilla, however, did not give Anasta the entire day to himself after avenging his loss through the doubles event.

Youth and experience blended well together for Arcilla and the young Jacob Lagman as they pulled away a convincing 10-4 victory.

Jacob Lagman’s family is so happy with the outcome of the tournament with Jacob gaining more lessons from the so-called tennis masters in the country.

Jacob also made sure that his name will also be mentioned not only because the tournament is being named after him, but after he clobbered two of the top players in the country.

Jacob won two of six games after he took away a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win against Ralph Kevin Barte before shocking Capangpangan with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph.

Jess Lagman, Jacob’s dad is looking at organizing a much bigger event next year.

The top six players from Manila along with Jacob Lagman left Cebu right after the game as they will play in a tournament in Las Piñas City starting today. – (FREEMAN)
