Fajardo-Sarigumba team tops Island Tee

CEBU, Philippines - The tandem of Major Gen. Jesus Fajardo and Ronnie Sarigumba bagged the overall title of the 11th Island Tee Golf Tournament played over the weekend at the Mactan Island Golf Club.

The tournament follows a two-man team format and is the club’s signature event.

Fajardo, commander of the 2nd Air Division, which is based at the Mactan Benito Ebuen Air Base, found a perfect partner in Sarigumba, who is mainstay of the MIGC team in the annual Philippine Airlines Interclub.

The duo scored 77 points in the Modified Stableford Scoring System during the first round, but both found their rhythm on the second round as they combined for 88 points to finish with a total of 165 points.

The class A title went to the pair of Yoshio Yamane and his Japan-based partner Kasunari Hamana with a total of 158 points on rounds of 80 and 78.

First runner-up was the team of Mactan’s Baltaire Balangauan and Cebu Country Club’s Jovi Neri with 145 on rounds of 72 and 73. Second runner-up honors went to Mactan’s Fernando Mondares and Ecotech’s Andrew Cañete with 144 (73-71).

The tournament called for the teams to be composed of either both club members of a club member and a guest from another club. Each team played two rounds during the four-day period.

The class B title went to the tandem of Marlou Cugtas and Edwin Espina, who are both members of the club, shooting rounds of 79 and 84 for a total of 163.

First runner-up for class B was the team of Mactan’s Boy Bautista and Leyte Golf’s Danny Orbe with 158 (80-78) while Eryle Payos and Lino Mabatid finished second runner-up with 157 points (83-74).

The scoring format awards six points for a net double-eagle, five for a net ace, four for net eagle, three for net birdie, two for net par, and one for net bogey.

Members Rodien Paca and Supt. Glenn Mayam combined for 164 points on rounds of 84 and 80 to bag the class C plum.

First runner-up for the group was the pair of Rudy Pagobo and his guest from Leyte, Tony Corpuz with 160 (80-80) while second runner-up honors went to Paolo Alberto and his partner from Mt. Malindang of Ozamis, Joven Mendoza shooting 157 points (78-79).

The class D title went to Jun Montañez and Iligan’s Alvin Lomondaya with 162 (89-73) followed by Nilo Ybañez and Dominador Bartolata with 136 (79-57) and Jose Mari Miranda and Mercedes’ Boy Lepiten with 135 (68-67).

Special individual awards also went to Sarigumba for the best gross on rounds of 67 and 66 strokes for a total of 11-under-par 133 and to four other players for shooting the best scores of the day.

The best for November 10 was made by Freddie Salimbangon, who shot 44 points. For the 11th it was Max Cabaral with 45 while on the 12th it was Yoshio Yamane with 45. On the 13th, the best score was 48 points made by Isao Suzuki.

Hole-in-one

Fr. Jose Dosado scored the lone ace in the tournament on Saturday knocking in his tee shot on the par-3 hole number 4.

Dosado used a 7-iron and a Titleist No. 3 ball for the feat that won him a special prize from the organizers. (FREEMAN)
