CESAFI

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

I saw the best of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) last Tuesday and luckily was spared from seeing its worst.

The best was the heart-stopping do-or-die battle between Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu and Cebu Eastern College.

When the game ended the Magis Eagles of SHS advanced to the finals against the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers ousting last year’s champions.

The worst was the battle for the second finals slot in the collegiate division between Southwestern University and University of the Visayas.

The game had to be called off with less than a minute to go when things got out of hand.

I still have to see the full report about the incident, but from the preliminary information that I got, it was not good and those who deserve to be punished must be punished.

I had a chance to talk briefly with CESAFI Commissioner Felix ‘Boy’ Tiukinhoy when I was on my way out of the Cebu Coliseum after the high school game.

I told him my observation, which is shared by many, that the people at the gate should have stopped selling tickets for the lower box when it was already full.

He said that he desires the same, but the problem is even before the tickets are sold, there are already many on the bleachers.

This is a perennial problem at the Cebu Coliseum, people who insist to go in and not pay not only for CESAFI games, but for almost all events that happen there.

It would be well appreciated by the Cebuanos if the management of the Cebu Coliseum would do something to solve this problem.

The Cebu Coliseum is a part of Cebu’s history in general, not just its sports history, so it is important that enough effort must be made to make attending events there more bearable.

The Pink Tee Golf Tournament is set tomorrow at the Cebu Country Club.

This is the final sporting event for the month-long celebration of Pink October or the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Since I haven’t been given the go signal by my doctor to play yet, I will have to be satisfied with just hanging out at the golf club.

By the way, our publisher Juanito ‘Ninong Nito’ Jabat, was asked by a reader where Taiwan’s Hsieh Min Nan, former winner of the Philippine Open is?

I got word from John Uy, grounds chairman of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club that he called up Taipei and was told that Hsieh is now a distributor of S Yard golf equipment.
