Freeman Cebu Sports

Next year, hopefully

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

Although my team has been on the losing side every edition of the annual La Salle-Ateneo Golf Tournament, except once, I always look forward to the next one.

It has nothing to do about being masochistic, but mainly because it is fun playing in the event.

Since there are not too many players from La Salle, I don’t really have much problem finding good company to be with even if they are from the opposing team.

They need me to complete the flight so that there would be somebody from the “enemy” to witness.

Last Saturday even my son was playing against me. The soggy conditions at Club Filipino did not help and the back nine was a major turn around.

Next year’s tournament will be hosted by La Salle and there has been a suggestion to bring the event to Bacolod City.

If this pushes through, then I am hopeful to be part of the winning team next year as there are many La Sallian golfers from the City of Smiles.

That is, however, still a plan, but the One La Salle Alumni Association Cebu Chapter is up to the challenge to taking care of next year’s tournament.

The rains did not stop the monthly medal committee of Alta Vista from heading to Jaclupan, Talisay City yesterday to bring some cheer to 500 public school children.

I haven’t been to the place for a very long time. The last time I passed the area must have been more that 30 years ago when we would pass through the Manipis Road on our way to Cebu City from Toledo City.

The group was led by Engr. Willy T. Go, chairman of the monthly medal committee and my fellow member of the club’s management and tournament committees.

Willy and his committee have been going around the various public schools to give school children some useful stuff.

Yesterday, they gave dental kits as well as some goodies.

Aside from Willy, the very active Titos like Rolly Santos, Ben Villamor, and John Uy were also there as well as Lino Dagus along with the club’s staff.

The money used for the various outreach activities come from the additional amount collected during the monthly medal tournaments.

The participants should be very happy to know that what they have given is indeed going a very long way.

With storm Ramon threatening, let us all take precautionary measures to ensure our safety and survival.

I hope that you have stocked up on ready to eat food, batteries, water, and other essentials.

If the storm doesn’t hit us, then let us thank God for that, and not get mad that our preparations haven’t been put to use.

It’s always best to be prepared for the worst, but keep on hoping for the best.
