Ultra for Pasig river

Cebuanos will have a chance to contribute to the rehabilitation of Pasig River when they take part on November 19 in the 102 kilometer Bogo City to Cebu City Ultramarathon. The ultramarathon got a boost recently with the entry of real estate developer Century Properties. The race which will start in the old Bogo City Hall at midnight is now known as The Centuries Properties Ultramarathon 2011 with the slogan 100 Kilometers, 100 Runners, 1 Nation, 1 Cause. In last Saturday’s presscon at the City Sports Club Cebu, AVP for Corporate Communications Terrie Fucanan-Yu said Century Properties is supporting the Run for Pasig River on November 20 by donating P 400,000. It will   go up to P 1 million in the event 100 runners each finish The Cebu Ultra and The Davao leg of Ultra on December 10. The firm recently launched a six-tower 2.6 hectare residential property called Acqua Private Residences. A requirement for participants is that he or she must have finished a 42K marathon and should be at least 18 years old during race day. Unlike previous ultras, we will impose a cut off at the halfway mark in Catmon and because of the distance we will allow support groups or escorts as long as they don’t tail the runner. Participants are required to use head lamps. Aid stations will be at every 10 kilometers . Registration fee is P 2,500 which is inclusive of a dri-fit race shirt which is customized, therefore you are advised to register early so your name and singlet size will be guaranteed. The other perks are race hat (Legionaire’s cap), sling bag, finishers’ dri-fit shirt and medal. Deadline of registration is October 31. Register at RUNNR in Ayala Center.

PNA n’ Dash

Just when I was getting ready to travel to Manila to bid goodbye to my brother Joey Uytiepo who’s migrating to Los Angeles, Dr. Roland Firmo of The Philippine Nurses Association called, asking me to assist their run, The N-DASH, a 3K, 6K and 12K race will be staged on October 22 at the Terraces in The Ayala Center Cebu. The race is timed during the PNA Annual National Convention and also the 89th Foundation Anniversary, 54th Nurses Week Celebration. Registration is now ongoing at the RUNNR in Ayala Center and at The Cebu City Sports Center.

Volunteers

When Precing Capangpangan asked me to assist him start over 19,000 runners in the recently concluded Milo Marathon Cebu Leg, I didn’t hesitate. Although the race was started in waves, it was still one hell of a job to send off a sea of green runners. Race organizer Ricky Ballesteros praised the volunteers and called them “ unsung heroes. “ In the Philippines. “ lu-oy ang volunteers”. In some races, they don’t even get to eat while waking up at an unholy hour and spending their own fare money to get to the race venue. But do you know what volunteers get in races like the Boston Marathon or SC Hong Kong Marathon? A volunteer in Boston for instance gets an Adidas running shoes, cap, jacket, dri-fit

Tshirt and jogging pants while those in Hong Kong get New Balance jackets, caps and t-shirts. “ Bisag wala’y ka-on,” I’ll volunteer. If you compute in pesos, it would convert to P 10,000.
