Mayor Alegado hoopfest

CEBU, Philippines - Exciting hardcourt action will once again dazzle the sports-minded townsfolk of Consolacion as the 2011 Mayor Alegado Cup Basketball Tournament fires this Sunday at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

Tournament commissioner Paul Alelu Q. Flores, once a vital cog of the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws in the prestigious UAAP during his college days, said the contending squads are divided into six brackets.

These are little mini (13-below), mini (15-above), Inter-barangay A and B, Open Consolacion category and Invitational Commercial division.

To further give meaning in the opening ceremony, Flores invited his close buddy and reigning PBA finals MVP Arwind Santos to grace the event.

“I invited Santos to attend the opening ceremony for him to serve as inspiration to these young athletes who aspire to become hard court stars someday,” said Flores, who played alongside Santos in steering the FEU Tamaraws to the UAAP men’s championship in 2004.

Consolacion Mayor Teresa P. Alegado also said that the concept of organizing another basketball tournament has been done for a purpose in providing entertainment and also as a positive diversion against drugs and gangs. (FREEMAN)
