CFIC President's Cup
There would be a slight increase the volume of vehicles heading to Danao City today as Club Filipino hosts the President’s Cup at its golf course in Pulangyuta, Danao City.
It must have been five or maybe four years since I last played in the course designed and built by Peter ‘Maestro’ Chiongbian.
The late Maestro told me the story about he built the course in this piece of property in Danao City after moving from one location to another due to the difficulty of acquiring enough land to build a course on.
For the young ones, the old Club Filipino course was situated where the Cebu Business Park (often mistakenly called as Ayala Business Park) is located.
The clubhouse was somewhere near the place where the Isuzu dealership is now located and many of the club’s old members can still vividly recall where the various holes used to be.

I was given the opportunity to do a research about the history of Club Filipino about six years ago and learned much about the course, which I never really had the chance to play.
My fondest memory of that old Club Filipino is probably that we had our prom in their clubhouse when I was a senior in high school at the University of the Philippines Cebu College.
I think you can still see part of the old clubhouse that was gutted by fire, but the memories of the old club remain in the hearts and minds of its members, who had the opportunity to be part of the old club.

Today’s tournament is a three-man, three-to-count team event.
Each team shall be composed of one club member and two guests. Due to the number of guests, who want to take part in the event, club members are allowed to have more than one team.
The current president of Club Filipino was the other day’s birthday boy, Ramon ‘Boboy’ Durano IV.
The awards ceremony will be held at the CFIC clubhouse located at the 16 th floor of the FGU-Ayala Life Building.
It seems that the slots were almost all filled up when I went there the other day to register for the event.
I’m sure the long drive will be worth it and I hope the weather would cooperate.

There are a few other golf events lined up for the rest of the month like the monthly medal of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club next Saturday, which is a two-man team event.
On the same day, the 7th Cheling Garcia Memorial Tournament is also set at the Cebu Country Club. This will be a three-man scramble tournament.
On the 23rd, I got an invitation to the Believe in Thailand “Meetings on the Green” also at Cebu Country Club.
On the 30th is the pro-am event of the Aboitiz Invitational 2011 and this will be followed by the four-day pro event on August 31 to September 3.
That’s a lot of golf to look forward to.
