Rory McIlroy proved that he’s got what it takes to win big and his record-setting win the US Open earned him a lot more fans around the world.
A few months ago, he fumbled during the Masters, but at Congressional Country Club in Maryland, Rory seemed to have enjoyed being at the top of the leaderboard and didn’t look like he was making extra effort to preserve his lead.
Rory enjoyed the limelight and it paid off. While I am one of those still hoping to see Tiger Woods back in his old form, I have also become a new fan of McIlroy, the kid from Northern Ireland.

This weekend, the 4th Amo Cup tees off at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club. Entry fee is P1,000 for club members and P2,000 for non-members.
I saw several mid-morning slots still open the last time I checked the tee times at the club’s registration counter.
The tournament is held in honor of the late Albino D. Gothong, who is best-remembered by the Cebu golf community for the big tournaments he organized.
Albino, who we also fondly called as Amo, was also a philanthropist, who helped many people from giving scholarships, building schools, contributing to various charitable foundations, and many more.
My fondest memories of Amo outside the golf events where I was a member of the organizing committees, was when he would suddenly call me requesting that a collector be sent to his office as he was giving something to a patient seeking help from The Freeman Foundation.
He never asked that his name be mentioned, but he gave huge amounts to help those patients.
This weekend’s event is a two-day, 18-hole contest, so choose only one day to play and don’t take too long to decide as the slots are running out.

If you are planning on joining a run on July 10, make it the Animo La Salle 12-K Run, which is starting and finishing at the Cebu International Convention Center.
This is part of the centennial celebration of La Salle in the Philippines. Since this one is in Cebu, the La Sallians from the Andres Soriano Memorial College de la Salle are spearheading the activity along with the local chapter of the One La Salle Cebu Alumni Association.
Aside from the 12-K event, there are also a 6-K and a 3-K event.
Those interested to join can register at either Runny in Ayala Center Cebu, Casa Ilongga at Robinson’s Place Cebu, and the Cebu City Sports Center.
I was told that there is going to be a big delegation from Toledo City that will be joining this event.
I hope that the La Sallians, their family, and friends would also support this race.
