Kanyoen bags 18th BiG crown

- Nimrod NL Quiñones -

CEBU, Philippines - The all-Japanese Team Kanyoen bagged the top honors in last Friday’s 18th Business in Golf (BiG) Tournament held at the Cebu Country Club.

The heavy downpour interrupted play in the afternoon, but three teams finished the 18-hole, four-man team event with identical scores of 156 points in the Modified Stableford Scoring System.

All players count for the team total in this tournament, which is one of the sidelights of the Cebu Business Month celebration.

Kanyoen beat two other teams in the countback to emerge as champion. Koichi Horii led the team with six-under-par 42 points while Masatsugu Ochiai and Susumu Hangai each contributed 39. The fourth player of the team, Tadashi Ochiai fired 36 points.

First runner-up honors went to Mitsubushi, which also amassed 156 points.

Carlo Magno led the team with ten-under-par 46 points. Richard Tio and Rene Poro each scored 37 points while Ben Dapat fired 36.

Second runner-up was team CIGA-3 also with 156 points. The team had Rolly de la Pieza and Maximo Reyes scoring 41 points apiece while Tito Lerio added 40. Nelson Rosales shot 34 points.

The top scoring company representative or alternate to the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry was awarded the ‘golfer of the year’ award. This went to Jose Angelico Abellana with 44 points.

Magno, however, bagged the individual award for the best net score with his 46 while Marko Sarmiento had the best gross score of two-under-par 38 points.

Mitsubishi also won a special award for being the best in uniform.

The event was chaired by Tito Solomon and was co-presented by the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI).

Consul Samuel Chioson, president of the CCCI as well as former president Jose Ng were on hand for the awards ceremony held at the CCC ballroom. (BANAT NEWS)
