CEBU, Philippines - Over a hundred athletes will showcase their wares in different sporting activities part of “Independent Lapu-Lapu - Singkwenta Na” celebration at the Millennium Park under the Marcelo Fernan Bridge today.
Sporting events featured include a folding bike competition, table tennis and chess.
It’s going to be anybody’s game in the folding bike event since it’s only the second time that such kind of race will take place here in Cebu.
The table tennis tournament, on the other hand, will be showcasing Lapu-Lapu’s up and coming players.
The chess event, it will feature the all-Lapu-Lapu City men’s event along with the open 12 and 15-under class.
More to it, International Master Enrico Sevilleno who is now based in California will also grace Lapu-Lapu’s 50th Charter Day celebration by playing an exhibition match with Lapu-Lapu’s very own, National Master Erik Gloria.
Yachts and other boats will also be moored at the foot of the second bridge for everyone to see.
Councilor Harry Radaza veered away from the traditional Charter Day celebration and made it a sporty and festive event as the city continues to promote sports tourism.
The holding of the three sporting events under the bridge is a way to showcase that the said area can be utilized for different activities.
After the sporting events comes a free concert with Vice Ganda and a grand musical fireworks display will also take place at night.
For residents of Lapu-Lapu and other guests and visitors who will not be able to go to the Millennium Park, 19 mainland barangays and one area at Olango Island will also have its own disco party and fireworks simultaneously to be done with that of the main venue. - THE FREEMAN
