The reason for golfing

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

The View Invitational 2011 will have its penultimate day today and many are excited about tomorrow’s awards ceremony.

The main reason for this is that while only a handful will win in the tournament, the field is equal in the raffles no matter how bad you hit the ball.

Golf is quite a tricky game. You can play a course several times in a year, but the conditions could vary everyday even if the layout doesn’t change.

You can hit a booming drive and flub your second shot. You can take so many strokes to make it to the green then sink a monstrous putt.

Sometimes, you think you got it nailed with only a few inches left to get the ball into the cup so you get a little careless and tap the ball, which would lip out and land much farther than from where you started.

I sometimes am inclined to agree when non-golfers say that the game is crazy.

But I got hooked on this game where a hook could be bad and so is a slice. In this game of inches or millimeters, depending on what measurement you want to use, all the trouble you go through on the course can result to some rewards on the awards night.

While I haven’t lost my desire to compete, I tend to attract the rewards that are more welcome when you reach home late at night with a bagful of dirty clothes and golf tales that nobody at home would probably want to listen to except maybe how you won the LCD TV as the first guy who was called wasn’t at the venue, thus was disqualified from winning.

Some guys are, however, luckier than most. They win both the trophies and the major raffle items, which probably means a longer time for their family members to listen to their tales when they wake up the next day to see the trophy and the prize in their living room.

Well, The View Invitational, which a competition, is still a fun event.Papa Rod Señido commented the other day that the presence of the sponsors’ representatives in the clubhouse and their set ups in the tables provided have added to the gaiety of the affair.

As I played my first of two rounds for the tournament yesterday, I decided even before teeing off to just enjoy the game. Then the rain fell.

The first half of the field will complete their 36 holes today, but it would be hard to really tell how the tournament would go.

Let’s wait what happens in the final day of action tomorrow.Remember game 2 of the 2011 NBA Finals, even being 15 points down in the final quarter did not stop the Dallas Mavericks from cooling the Heat.

The sad plight of our athletes taking part in the recent PSC-POC National Games in Bacolod City was highlighted in the posts of a participant on Facebook.

Unfortunately for the participants of such competitions, billeting has always been a problem.

I hope our sports leaders would find ways to make things better for the athletes in the future competitions. It is not easy to compete when you don’t even have a proper place for rest.
