CEBU, Philippines - Jake Ricaplaza powered Abellana National School-Pomeroy to its third win in the boys 17 category of the Cebu Amateur Football Club’s 11th National Inter-Club Football Cup at the San Roque Parish Church field in Brgy. Subangdaku, Mandaue.
ANS-Pomeroy escaped with a 3-2 cliffhanger over Paref-Springdale.
ANS-Pomeroy, last year’s runner-up, zoomed to a 2-0 lead in the first half as Ricaplaza caught Springdale by surprise, knocking in a goal with just a minute gone by in the match.
Ricaplaza’s teammate Pedro Diao added another goal in the 22nd.
Ricaplaza scored anew for ANS-Pomeroy at the 47th to pad their lead to 3-0.
Springdale fired back at the 50th through the efforts of Leon Valenzuela and Nicolas Villacin to cut ANS’ lead to one but time was not on its side.
Ormoc, on the other hand, defeated Mandaue Technical Institute, 7-2.
MTI avenged its loss in the boys 17 by outsmarting Ormoc, 5-2, in the boys 14, while Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu dumped Blessed John Seminary, 5-2.
At Springdale, SHS-Ateneo de Cebu logged its third victory at the expense of St.Joseph School of Mactan/3 Bros, 3-1, and Danao, 2-0, in the players 10 bracket.
In the men’s open action, Waterfresh-Queen City United punched its way to a 5-0 whitewash of Coast Guard, while Hiroshi nipped last minute addition B-Meg, 3-1, at the USC-TC.
In the girls 17, USC–TC beat Aroroy, 2-1, to stay undefeated in four starts. – THE FREEMAN
